Tooth decay is one of the biggest threats to your smile. When you consume sugars, the bacteria in your mouth produce acids that weaken the outer layers of your teeth. If this process goes unchecked, it can lead to the formation of a cavity where bacteria can live and grow. Large cavities can eat through the tooth and eventually reach the nerve, causing pain, infection, and further damage to the tooth. While cavities are the most common tooth problem, teeth can also become cracked or chipped due to trauma or biting down on something hard.

The most common treatment for a cavity or chipped tooth is a filling. To fill a tooth, we first anesthetize the tooth so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Afterward, a small dental handpiece is used to remove the decay from the tooth. Finally, we restore any missing tooth structure using a material that matches the look and feel of your teeth.

If a tooth is cracked or missing a large amount of tooth structure, you may need a crown. A crown involves anesthetizing and shaving down the tooth so that a prosthetic tooth can be placed over it. Crowns are very strong and can provide long-lasting stability to teeth that would otherwise be susceptible to breaking.
